Honestly Gintama is the most hilarious anime I've watched, after introducing it to multiple friends they didn't enjoy the humor as I did. However, I think it's because of it's unusually setting and characters that will grow on you as you keep watching. If you drop it at the third episode then you'll never stay to watch the growth and humor the author puts in.
SUMMARY
Sakata Gintoki is a samurai who lives in the Amanto (alien) world of Edo Japan. The samurai race have been eliminated besides the Joi and other rebels who continue to fight for their country. A otaku glasses wearing young man, Shinpachi and a strong China girl, Kagura, join Gintoki's Odd Jobs. As they roam through Edo scraping for money the numerous adventures they encounter never stop. (seriously...they're on ep.306 right now)But seriously, without the occasional arcs the anime has no plot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the best things about Gintama is it's fourth wall breaking moments. The anime references real life people and events and parodies other anime. Although the humor may not be understood by everyone because of some obscure references, they also use perverted humor. The best part about the anime is that they don't care. The main character is everything the hero should not be, and yet he's hilarious and able to be serious at times.
The show is able to mix in the humor with the serious fighting arcs, and even make a simple conversation interesting. Reoccurring characters are added to the family as the show continues on to build a larger and larger community. If you love the anime you'll love it...if you hate it, you'll hate it with a burning passion.
